Educator
Alex is known as one of a rare breed of educators who is equally at home working with beginners all the way through to the most advanced musicians.
In his work with the Benedetti Foundation, Alex has helped to guide and inspire not only young string players, but adult learners too. He has also led workshops for string teachers. His online series on interpreting and analysing string repertoire has proved hugely popular.
A former head of strings at Uppingham School, and a former professor at the Royal College of Music in the Junior Department, Alex has for many years also acted as a coach and conductor for the National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain and, more recently, for the National Youth String Orchestra of Great Britain.
Alex’s students have achieved success as members of the National Youth and National Children’s Orchestras of Great Britain. Other successes for his students include scholarships to music colleges, distinctions at diplomas, and awards and prizes in competitions both in the UK and abroad. Chamber groups coached by Alex are regular prize winners at the Pro Corda Chamber Music Festival.
From 2017-2022 Alex was Artistic Director (Music) at the King’s High School in Warwick where he oversaw the musical education of children aged 3 to 18. In 2021 his department earned a nomination for an Independent School of the Year award for the Creative Arts.
Alex is now Director of Music at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset, one of the UK’s 5 specialist music schools.
